This page explains what matteveland.net collects when you visit, why, who else sees it, and how long it’s kept. The short version: I don’t run analytics services, advertising networks or tracking pixels, and I don’t sell or rent anything about you.
What the server records
Like every web server, this site’s server keeps an access log. Each entry holds the IP address the request came from, the page asked for, the time, the page that linked you here, and your browser’s description of itself. The log is deleted after 30 days.
I use it to keep the site running and secure, and to count visits. The visit count doesn’t keep your IP address: each visitor is turned into a one-way code that changes every day, so it can tell one reader from another on the same day and nothing more.
Cloudflare
Every request to this site passes through Cloudflare, which protects it from attacks and delivers it quickly. Cloudflare sees the same details the server log does. Its privacy policy is at cloudflare.com/privacypolicy.
The contact form
If you use the contact form, I receive your name, your email address, what you write, and your IP address. It’s stored on this site and emailed to me. I use it to reply to you and for nothing else.
Before it arrives, the message is checked for spam by Akismet, a service run by Automattic. Akismet sees the message, your IP address and your browser details. Its privacy policy is at automattic.com/privacy.
Comments
If you leave a comment, the site keeps your name, email address, website if you give one, the comment, and your IP address. Your name, website and comment are shown publicly. Your email address is not. Comments are checked for spam by Akismet, a service run by Automattic, which sees the comment, your IP address and your browser details.
If you tick the box to save your details, your browser keeps cookies with your name, email and website so you don’t have to type them again. They last a year.
Next to each comment the site shows a picture from Gravatar, another Automattic service. To find it, a scrambled form of the commenter’s email address is sent to Gravatar. Your browser connects to Gravatar to load these pictures.
Images
Images and some site files are delivered by WordPress.com’s content network (addresses starting i0.wp.com or c0.wp.com). Your browser connects to it to load them, so it sees your IP address and browser details.
Missing pages
When someone asks for a page that doesn’t exist, the site logs the address asked for, the time and the IP address, so broken links can be fixed. These entries are deleted after 7 days.
Security
Jetpack, from Automattic, provides this site’s firewall and login protection. To block attacks it checks the IP address and details of incoming requests.
Cookies
I don’t use cookies to track you. WordPress sets cookies only if you log in, or save your details when commenting where that’s available.
What I don’t do
There are no analytics services such as Google Analytics. There are no advertising networks, tracking pixels or session recording. Nothing about you is sold, rented or traded.
Do Not Track
I don’t track visitors across other sites, so a browser’s Do Not Track setting changes nothing here.
Children
This site isn’t meant for children under 13 and doesn’t knowingly collect anything from them.

Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
